Training the mind. Leading the heart.

“The heart cannot love what the mind does not know….If we want to feel deeply about God, we must learn to think deeply about God….We must make a study of our God: what he loves, what he hates, how he speaks and acts. We cannot imitate a God whose features and habits we have never learned. We must make a study of him if we want to become like him. We must seek his face.”

— Jen Wilkin

Part of the church’s role in discipleship and Christian formation is equipping the mind so that it can lead the heart. As we work toward deeper affections for God, we must learn more about him—his nature, his character, and his work in the world through Jesus. Risen Church Institute exists for that purpose: to equip the mind for the sake of leading the heart.

The Institute program consists of various classes and lectures, offered at different times throughout the calendar year.

Spring 2024 Course: Christian Literacy

This 8-week class will study the Joseph narrative (Genesis 37-50) by analyzing its characters, setting, plot, and literary structure. It will also cover the role of Joseph in the biblical canon, especially how Joseph serves as a type of Christ. The hope for this class is that as we immerse ourselves in the story of Joseph, we will hear God’s word with greater clarity, and we will treasure Jesus more deeply. The class dates are Tuesdays from January 30th - March 19th, and each class will be held from 6:00-7:30 PM.
