Sabbaticals at Risen
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him” (Psalm 62:1-2).
By creating space for rest in and dependence on the Lord, sabbaticals are an essential component to the health and longevity not only of a church’s leaders but of the church itself.

Sabbatical FAQ
-
A sabbatical is an extended time away from regular ministry responsibilities for the purpose of filling that time instead with rest, connection with family, and seeking the Lord’s presence and guidance for the next chapter of ministry.
Sabbaticals are different from other kinds of time off, usually both in scope and purpose. It is different from a vacation in not only length, but also in its structure and purpose. The leader going on sabbatical works with the elders of the church to determine the best use of time for rest in the Lord and renewal of vision.
It is also different from a leave of absence in that the hope is that it proactive, not reactive. Sabbaticals are best taken from a place of health, joy, and expectation.

Sabbaticals have several purposes. Among the most important are:
Providing space for spiritual rest and renewal.
Strengthening a leader’s connection to God and his family.
Demonstrating trust and dependence on the Lord by stepping away from day-to-day responsibilities.
Creating space for seeking the Lord’s guidance on the vision and direction of the church.
Sabbaticals don’t only serve the leader; they also strengthen the church by clearly showing that a church’s health isn’t dependent on one leader’s presence or gifts. And at the same time, they are chances to intentionally create space for other leaders to exercise their gifts in the body.
